“Deadly Train Derailment in Portugal Claims Lives of Foreigners”

Passengers on a train in Portugal were left injured and some covered in blood after the train derailed and crashed into a building, resulting in the deaths of over a dozen people, including foreigners. According to Portugal’s National Institute of Medical Emergencies, among the 15 fatalities in the Gloria Funicular derailment were non-Portuguese individuals. The identities of any British or Irish nationals involved have not been confirmed yet. In addition to the 15 fatalities, there are 18 severely injured individuals and 13 with minor injuries.

Authorities have not disclosed the nationalities of the victims involved in the tragic incident at the major tourist spot in Lisbon. Witnesses reported that the building the funicular collided with was a hotel, and they observed victims in critical condition. The prompt arrival of police and ambulances was noted, with one witness describing a scene of victims with severe injuries and many appearing unconscious. The tragedy has deeply affected local residents, prompting the mayor of Lisbon to declare three days of mourning.

Carlos Moedas expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims, stating that Lisbon is in mourning. The Gloria Funicular, an essential transportation link connecting the city center with the upper tourist area, derailed around 6:05 PM. Emergency services have been present at the crash site on Avenida da Liberdade throughout the night.

Portugal’s President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed deep regret over the fatalities and injuries from the crash, offering condolences and solidarity to the affected families. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the incident, with initial suspicions pointing to a potential issue with the funicular’s braking system.
