“Drivers Warned: Drenching Pedestrians Could Result in Hefty Fines”

Motorists are being advised to be cautious when driving in wet conditions following a rainy start to September. Violating the law by splashing pedestrians could result in fines of up to £5,000 and penalty points on the driver’s license. According to the Road Traffic Act 1988, this behavior is considered driving without reasonable consideration for others on the road. The Highway Code also prohibits driving without due care and attention for pedestrians.

Penalties for drenching pedestrians can amount to £100 and three penalty points, but in severe cases, it can reach £5,000. To avoid such penalties, drivers are urged to navigate carefully during wet weather, using dipped headlights, maintaining increased following distances, and reducing speed.

Greg Wilson, CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, emphasized the importance of following road rules to ensure safety and prevent incidents like splashing pedestrians. He advised drivers to be extra cautious in rainy conditions, slowing down to allow for better reaction times and increasing following distances.

When driving in wet weather, it is crucial to be aware of deeper puddles, maintain tire tread depth, and use dipped headlights for improved visibility. Additionally, drivers should exercise caution around vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists to avoid potential penalties and fines.

To prevent windows from fogging up due to condensation, it is recommended to use air conditioning while driving in wet conditions. Failure to maintain clear visibility of the road could lead to fines of up to £1,000 and three penalty points on the driver’s license.
