“Expert Tip: Keep Your Fridge Fresh with This Affordable Hack!”

If you’re looking to thoroughly clean your refrigerator, try this cost-effective expert trick to keep it smelling fresh for a long time.

Despite being one of the most frequently used household appliances, only one in five people clean their fridge freezer twice a year, as reported in a 2024 study. Neglecting to clean your fridge can lead to the accumulation of dirt, posing risks of foodborne illnesses and cross-contamination.

Hotpoint’s senior product manager for refrigeration, Jamie Cooper, highlighted the importance of regular deep cleaning to maintain the efficiency and safety of your fridge freezer. Not only does it enhance hygiene, but it also prolongs the appliance’s lifespan and aids in saving energy in the long run.

Fortunately, there is a very affordable and simple method to keep your fridge smelling fresh using a common kitchen item.

Before starting the cleaning process, it is crucial to empty the fridge. In cases of frost build-up in the freezer, safely unplug and defrost it, mopping up excess water with towels. Using warm water can aid in speeding up the process, but avoid using boiling water to prevent damage to the appliance. This is also a good opportunity to inspect for maintenance issues and check for expired food items.

Following this, remove all removable components such as shelves, drawers, and racks. Utilize a simple yet effective hack by using baking soda. These components can be cleaned with warm soapy water or by mixing one tablespoon of baking soda with half a liter of warm water for a natural and safe cleaning solution that removes grime without causing scratches.

Baking soda is a versatile and budget-friendly cleaning agent that is ideal for maintaining your fridge freezer. Additionally, it can be used to absorb odors between deep cleanings. Placing an open container of baking soda in the fridge can eliminate unwanted smells for up to a month, while a cotton ball with a few drops of vanilla extract can provide a pleasant scent.

If you don’t have baking soda at home, you can easily purchase 200g of it from Asda for just 65p.
