“Experts Warn: Delay Smartphone for Kids Until 14”

Leading experts caution parents against the early introduction of smartphones to children. Daisy Greenwell, co-founder and director of Smartphone Free Childhood, advises waiting until a child is at least 14 for a smartphone and 16 for social media to ensure they are better equipped to navigate the online world effectively.

The warning follows comments made by Prince William during an interview where he mentioned the dilemma of deciding whether 12-year-old Prince George should have a mobile phone. The royal couple, he and Kate, are contemplating providing a phone with no internet access for their son.

Reflecting on her experience, medical herbalist Makeda Hemans expresses regret over giving her daughter a phone at the age of 11. She observed negative effects on her daughter’s well-being, including withdrawal and exposure to harmful content on social media platforms.

Makeda shares that her daughter faced bullying on the school WhatsApp group, leading to emotional distress. Implementing restrictions on phone usage improved her daughter’s mood significantly, emphasizing the importance of parental controls.

Despite the challenges, Makeda acknowledges the necessity for her daughter to stay connected with peers and has set up controls to limit access to certain apps. However, she admits that in hindsight, she might have reconsidered granting her daughter a phone at such a young age.

In response, Lani, Makeda’s daughter, acknowledges the benefits of having a phone for communication but highlights the distractions it can bring. She mentions feeling overwhelmed by the pressure and negativity encountered online, particularly through social media.

Experts like Daisy emphasize the profound impact smartphones have on children’s development and mental health. They urge parents to implement parental controls, limit screen time, and encourage face-to-face interactions to foster healthy relationships and minimize the negative effects of excessive phone usage.

Daisy advocates for a collective effort among families to delay smartphone introduction to children, promoting a supportive network through initiatives like the Parent Pact. She emphasizes the importance of open communication with children regarding their phone usage and experiences, underscoring the need for parental guidance and support in navigating the digital world.
