“Family Tragedy in Istanbul: Pesticide Poisoning Kills Parents and Young Children”

Tragedy struck a family of four, including two young children, during their holiday in Istanbul, Turkey, as they succumbed to poisoning from a pesticide used to eliminate bed bugs in their hotel room.

The distressing incident unfolded on November 11, when the family, who had traveled from Germany, fell ill just two days after checking into their hotel in Istanbul for a vacation that started on November 9.

The victims were identified as Cigdem Bocek, 27, her husband Servet, 38, and their children, three-year-old Masal and six-year-old Kadir Muhammet. In a desperate attempt to get help, the father hailed a taxi and implored the driver to rush them to the nearest hospital.

The taxi driver recounted the distressing scene, detailing how the family was rushed into the car, with the little girl repeatedly vomiting and the mother unconscious against the window.

The family’s health deteriorated rapidly in their hotel room, leading to their tragic demise, as reported by the Daily Express.

Initially suspected to be a case of food poisoning from local street food, the investigation took a turn when 11 individuals, including hotel staff, were arrested by authorities, linking the incident to the use of aluminium phosphide, a chemical in bedbug treatment, which may have seeped into the family’s room through the bathroom ventilation shaft, causing their poisoning.

Aluminium phosphide, commonly used as a pesticide, can be fatal if inhaled at high levels. Further inquiries revealed that at least one worker from the pest control company lacked the necessary certification for handling such chemicals.

CCTV footage captured the family from Hamburg, Germany, checking into the hotel on November 9. Just two days later, after a day of sightseeing, they were rushed to the hospital with symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

Tragically, Cigdem and her two children passed away shortly after, while Servet lost his battle after six days in intensive care at Cemil Taskcioglu Hospital.

The hotel was evacuated and sealed off for investigation, with authorities collecting samples for testing from various items within the premises.

Istanbul’s Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initially detained seven individuals, including street food vendors, for questioning. The Forensic Medicine Institute is examining samples from eateries where the family dined.

Moreover, belongings of two other guests hospitalized for suspected poisoning were seized for investigation. Mustafa Celik, the grieving grandfather, expressed his devastation, mentioning the family’s plan to visit him after their Istanbul trip.

Mr. Celik vowed to pursue legal action against those responsible and demanded strict penalties for any culpable parties.
