A woman passed away shortly after a swarm of bees stung her in the Ballycastle area of Ballina, Ireland. The incident occurred on Monday evening, prompting emergency services to respond around 5.40pm. The woman, aged in her 70s, was airlifted to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to the injuries.
Another woman in her 40s also required hospitalization for non-life-threatening injuries. The local authorities confirmed the pensioner’s death in a statement, mentioning that the incident triggered a joint response from the police and emergency services. The deceased woman was airlifted to Sligo General Hospital, where she later died. The woman who assisted, aged in her 40s, was taken to Mayo University Hospital for treatment.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the cause of death, guiding the ongoing police investigation. Additionally, the local coroner has been notified of the incident.
In a separate incident last year, a six-year-old boy survived being stung more than 1,100 times by bees while on a farm in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The boy, accompanied by his stepfather, was attacked by the swarm and rushed to the hospital in a coma. Despite the severity of the stings, the boy eventually recovered, with his father expressing gratitude for the miraculous turnaround.
Toxicologist Sandro Benites emphasized the critical role of immediate medical intervention in saving the boy’s life, noting that such a high number of bee stings could be fatal without prompt care.
