Steve Finnan, a former player for Liverpool, is currently contesting a bankruptcy petition following a prolonged legal dispute with his brother, Sean. The 49-year-old ex-Republic of Ireland defender was entangled in nearly ten years of financial conflicts with his sibling.
Finnan had invested in Sean’s property enterprise, which subsequently faced a significant downturn. Concerned about the management of the company, Finnan, who had previously sold off a collection of his career memorabilia, eventually settled for £4 million from his brother after bringing the matter to the High Court in 2018.
Despite not receiving the settlement, Finnan proceeded to make Sean bankrupt in July 2019. However, the tables have turned, with Finnan now encountering financial troubles due to prolonged legal battles with attorneys.
In an effort to hold a Charles Russell Speechlys lawyer in contempt of court during a £6 million negligence claim, Finnan’s attempt failed and led to a substantial bill. Additionally, Finnan became embroiled in a dispute with Candey Ltd, the firm that took over his case.
Despite contesting their charges, Finnan lost the legal battle. Allegedly failing to settle his debts, Finnan is now confronting a petition at Central London County Court.
The bankruptcy petition was reassigned to a court where District Judge Carla Revere issued various directives and orders. Finnan filed an appeal against a portion of the order, resulting in the postponement of the bankruptcy case scheduled for September.
Arguing that the case was too intricate for a county court hearing, Finnan requested it be escalated and alleged a bias against him by District Judge Revere.
The case was subsequently transferred to the High Court, where Finnan sought to challenge earlier orders in the bankruptcy case, but a judge deemed his appeal as merely a delaying tactic with no merit.
Mr Justice Mellor rejected the appeal, emphasizing that the bankruptcy petition did not involve substantial amounts but primarily Finnan’s costs order of less than £50,000.
Declining permission to appeal, Mr Justice Mellor labeled the appeal as entirely baseless and a futile attempt to prolong the legal process unnecessarily.
Finnan, known for his stints at Birmingham, Notts County, Fulham, and Liverpool, achieved success in winning the FA Cup and Champions League, notably in the iconic 2005 Istanbul final.
