This year, Gen Z in the UK is adding a unique touch to their Christmas dinners by incorporating a variety of unconventional sauces alongside the traditional gravy. A recent survey of 2,000 adults who participate in Christmas festivities revealed the trend among young Brits to introduce different sauces to their holiday meals.
The survey highlighted that popular choices among Gen Z include sriracha (36%), curry sauce (39%), salad cream (25%), barbecue sauce (21%), and sweet chilli sauce (21%) on their Christmas tables. Surprisingly, more than half of Gen Z individuals (51%) have opted for mayo, and an even larger percentage (56%) have gone for ketchup to accompany their Christmas dinner.
Contrary to traditional expectations, the study found that 43% of Gen Z are breaking away from norms and prefer unconventional condiments like ketchup over the typical gravy for their Christmas feast.
Sauces play a crucial role for many during Christmas: more than half (51%) stated that their Christmas dinner experience would not be complete without their favorite sauce, with nearly six out of ten (58%) admitting they cannot do without their preferred condiment.
Subway conducted a study to mark the launch of three Christmas baubles shaped like sauce bottles, inspired by their popular sauces – Chipotle Southwest, Sweet Onion, and Honey Mustard. These baubles, made in the UK from 100% recycled plastic, are part of a limited-time offer.
A spokesperson from Subway, where customers can get these exclusive Christmas baubles for free starting at 10 am today, expressed appreciation for the sauce preferences of Brits and the innovative combinations they create.
The survey also uncovered that Gen Z’s enthusiasm for condiments goes beyond the dining table. It revealed that 44% have argued with friends or family over sauce choices, 43% have rejected a meal due to unavailability of their preferred sauce.
Moreover, 32% have brought their own sauce to a meal, and nearly a quarter (24%) have admitted to consuming condiments directly from the bottle.
