“George Best’s First Love Transitions to Buddhist Monk”

George Best’s initial romantic partner transitioned into a practicing monk and shaved her head after separating from the renowned Manchester United star. Best, who passed away exactly two decades ago at the age of 59 after struggling with alcohol addiction, engaged in numerous high-profile relationships during and after his iconic football career and extravagant lifestyle.

His first prominent partner was model Jackie Glass, who initially turned down Best’s advances while he was playing for United and she resided in London. However, the charismatic Northern Irishman eventually won her over, leading to a whirlwind romance.

Glass, now known as Ani Rinchen, shared in 2015 with BelfastLive: “Of course, I succumbed in the end. He was a captivating man.”

It was Glass who ended their relationship upon discovering his infidelity through the media. She explained: “We were together seriously for a year and then on and off for another year. I was his first love.

“He claimed it meant nothing and tried to reconcile with me. I was tempted, but I couldn’t see things changing. Although we loved each other, our lifestyles differed. I didn’t want to be a footballer’s partner.”

Glass took a vastly different path from Best, embracing Buddhism and assuming a new identity after being inspired by a speech from the Dalai Lama. After moving to a Buddhist monastery, she became ordained as a nun in 1994.

Opting for a life of celibacy, seclusion, daily meditation, and wearing simple red robes while forgoing makeup, Ani Rinchen stated: “I had this notion that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy life. However, I grew weary of parties, excessive drinking, and meaningless conversations.

“I cut my lengthy blonde hair. Feeling the air on my head was liberating. I let go of all things that were detrimental to me.

“I believe he strayed far from his true self. We often focus outwardly and neglect introspection. Buddhism guides you back to your essence.”

Upon hearing of Best’s passing while on a retreat to Holy Island, she recalled: “It was very sorrowful. We held a small ceremony and offered prayers.

“I could have followed George’s path. I was a youthful, attractive girl. I knew many people but didn’t feel I had genuine friends. I am much happier now.

“Somebody informed me that George was reading a book by the Dalai Lama towards the end. Perhaps he was warming up to it. Maybe in the next life…”
