A cautionary alert has been issued by a healthcare professional regarding the potential health risks associated with combining a commonly used daily supplement with specific foods and beverages. The concern arises from the fact that such combinations may hinder the body’s ability to effectively absorb vital minerals.
Dr. Suraj Kukadia, also known as Dr. Sooj, emphasized the importance of being cautious when taking iron supplements. Iron plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, such as the production of red blood cells, maintaining cellular health, skin condition, and bolstering the immune system.
While a well-rounded diet typically supplies sufficient iron for most individuals, there are exceptions. Some people may struggle with natural iron absorption, potentially leading to iron deficiency anemia—a serious condition characterized by symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and irregular heartbeat.
Dr. Sooj advised viewers on TikTok to pay attention if they are taking iron supplements, as iron deficiency anemia can develop gradually over months or years, manifesting as tiredness, breathlessness, dizziness, palpitations, pale skin, and headaches. It’s important to differentiate between iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia, with the latter requiring more targeted treatment beyond over-the-counter tablets.
For individuals with a genuine iron deficiency, Dr. Sooj typically recommends a daily iron intake of at least 200 milligrams. He cautioned against consuming iron tablets alongside milk or dairy products, suggesting instead to pair them with vitamin C sources like orange juice to enhance absorption, as dairy products can impede iron assimilation in the body.
The NHS also advises against taking iron supplements with milk, as it can inhibit iron absorption. Similarly, Medline Plus recommends waiting at least two hours after consuming milk or calcium before taking iron supplements, as iron is best absorbed on an empty stomach.
If experiencing symptoms of iron deficiency anemia, it is advisable to consult a GP before considering iron supplementation to address the condition effectively.
