“Iconic Marks and Spencer Store in Wolverhampton to Close After 93 Years”

Marks and Spencer is set to close down one of its longstanding department stores in Wolverhampton after nearly a century of operation. The Dudley Street store, established in 1929, has faced challenges in its performance following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The retail giant has initiated discussions with the employees affected by the closure, as the lease for the store was originally scheduled to end in 2027. Social media users have expressed disappointment over the news, with some stating that the store was a primary reason for visiting the town.

Calum Telford, the regional manager at M&S, clarified the rationale behind the decision to shut down the Dudley Street store. He mentioned that the closure is part of a strategic store rotation plan aimed at enhancing growth and ensuring an optimal shopping experience for customers. Telford acknowledged the loyal customers who have supported the store over the years and assured that efforts are being made to secure alternative food-related locations in Wolverhampton.

The closure aligns with M&S’s broader strategy announced in October 2022 to shift focus towards food-only stores. The company aims to reduce the number of “full line” stores from 247 to 180 by 2028 while simultaneously opening 104 additional Simply Food outlets. As part of this initiative, M&S plans to invest nearly £500 million in its store rotation program, leading to the creation of 3,400 new job opportunities.

Wolverhampton Council’s cabinet member for city development, jobs, and skills, Councillor Chris Burden, expressed understanding regarding M&S’s decision, attributing it to evolving market dynamics and changing consumer behavior. The council is collaborating with M&S to identify suitable locations that align with the company’s revised business model.

In response to the closure, the Wolves at Work employment support team, in conjunction with the Department for Work and Pensions and other city partners, is prepared to provide assistance to affected employees and their families during this transitional period.
