A remarkable individual, Jamie McDonald, has accomplished numerous extraordinary feats for charity. Having completed 210 marathons, a 5,000-mile run from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and a 14,000-mile cycling journey from Bangkok to Gloucester, he has raised an impressive £1 million for various causes. Jamie, who faced health challenges in his early years, has now initiated a new charity called Ward Buddies to support hospitalized children.
Born with syringomyelia and other health issues, Jamie spent significant time in hospitals during his childhood. However, his condition improved at the age of nine. In 2012, he embarked on his fundraising mission by cycling back from Bangkok, using a second-hand bike bought for £50. Subsequently, Jamie completed multiple daring challenges, such as a 5,500-mile run across America and setting world records for static biking and treadmill running.
Now a married father of three, Jamie has introduced Ward Buddies to ensure that young patients in hospitals receive companionship and emotional support. The charity’s volunteers will offer essential companionship to children who are alone during their hospital stay, filling a crucial gap left by absent family members. Jamie emphasizes the importance of providing emotional care alongside physical treatment for young patients.
With the support of a team of medical experts, Ward Buddies aims to address the issue of children being left alone in hospitals. The charity has already enlisted 25 active volunteers and conducted a successful pilot program at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Jamie’s dedication to this cause is evident as he plans to continue his fundraising efforts through marathons and awareness campaigns. The ultimate goal is to expand the Ward Buddies program to hospitals nationwide, relying on public donations to achieve this vision.
To contribute to this cause, donations can be made to Ward Buddies through their website. The charity has also released a campaign video to raise awareness about their mission.
