British middle-distance runner Josh Kerr is set to target breaking the national 1500m record at the upcoming Novuna London Diamond League event. Kerr, the reigning world champion, has expressed his intent not to settle for a slow-paced race.
Originally envisioned as a showdown between Kerr and his rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who is absent due to injury, the event has now transformed into an exciting Battle of the Brits. Kerr is optimistic about surpassing his current record of 3:27.79, but faces stiff competition from four other British runners eyeing the top spot, with one particularly poised to challenge his supremacy.
George Mills, riding a wave of success after posting a time of 3:28.36 in Paris recently, has placed himself just behind Kerr and Sir Mo Farah on the all-time list. Kerr, however, remains the frontrunner and is aiming for a blistering pace of 1:51 through the first 800m, confident that such speed could propel him to a new record.
Expressing his competitive spirit, Kerr stated, “I’m focused on winning, but I believe I can achieve a fast time as well.” He emphasized the importance of seizing victory in a race rich with top-tier athletes, noting that a British record would be an added bonus.
Other notable British contenders include Jake Wightman, the 2022 world champion who has battled through multiple injuries, and Neil Gourley, a silver medallist at the world indoors earlier this year, both showing promising form leading up to the national championships. Additionally, Elliot Giles should not be underestimated in the upcoming race.
Kerr anticipates an electrifying competition, aiming to leave his mark on the leaderboard as he looks ahead to the world championships.
