“Luke Donald Mulls Third Ryder Cup Captaincy Bid”

Luke Donald is set to discuss the possibility of taking on the Ryder Cup captaincy for the third time in 2027 with officials from the DP World Tour in Dubai this week. Shane Lowry, the hero of Bethpage Black, has encouraged Donald to continue leading the team in Ireland.

Having previously guided Europe to victory in Rome in 2021 and Long Island last September, Donald is aiming to become the first European captain to win the Ryder Cup three times, a feat only achieved by Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher before. The 48-year-old golfer is currently participating in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, marking his first tournament of the year.

In an upcoming meeting with Guy Kinnings, the CEO of DP World, Donald will delve into the details of the Ryder Cup captaincy. The decision-making process for Europe’s captaincy is expected to be finalized within the next few months, with the announcement typically made in March.

Reflecting on the potential responsibility, Donald stated, “I will sit down for a chat with Guy this week just to see where I am. I kinda know what the job entails but just to see what they are looking for. Just a chat. I have got a couple more months to decide.” He acknowledged the additional workload and travel demands that come with the role, especially given his residence in the United States.

Lowry, who played a crucial role in securing a half point to retain the Ryder Cup in New York, believes that Donald is the natural choice for the captaincy. Expressing his support, Lowry emphasized, “I think it’s Luke’s if he wants it. Does he want it or not? I’m not sure. It’s a big undertaking for him, and he’s obviously been very successful.”

While mentioning the potential candidates like Vice-captain Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose if Donald opts out, Lowry emphasized the importance of continuity and expressed his desire to see Donald lead the team once again.

Donald also shared insights from discussions with fellow players like Rory McIlroy, Shane, and Matt Fitzpatrick, who have shown support for his potential return as captain. The backing from players is a significant factor in his decision-making process.

The decision on the Ryder Cup captaincy for 2027 remains pending as Donald weighs the pros and cons of leading the European team once more.
