Lush has declared the closure of all its stores in a show of support for Gaza amid ongoing conflict in the region. The popular cosmetics retailer stated on its website that it empathizes with the distress felt by many witnessing the dire situation in Gaza and, therefore, will be temporarily shutting down its shops, website, and factories throughout the United Kingdom today.
Notices displayed in the windows of their 102 stores convey the message: “Stop starving Gaza – we are closed in solidarity.” Lush highlighted that this decision would result in the British government missing out on tax revenue from the business and its patrons.
While acknowledging the inconvenience to customers, Lush emphasized that their commitment to exceptional service led to this difficult choice. The company expressed gratitude for the shared concerns of their customers regarding the situation in Gaza.
Previously, Lush had pledged to donate all profits from sales of its Watermelon Slice Soap towards mental health support for children in Gaza and the West Bank. They now intend to reintroduce this fundraising soap, with proceeds earmarked for medical services, including organizations preparing to offer prosthetic limb services to individuals injured in Gaza.
Lush underscored the financial impact of their closure on tax contributions to the UK Government, hoping to convey a message for more decisive governmental action to halt the violence and arms sales originating from the UK.
While the closures apply only to their UK operations for now, Lush anticipates similar actions in their international branches as other leadership teams explore ways to demonstrate solidarity. The company operates in 50 countries, including Canada, Croatia, Germany, Japan, and Australia.
The conflict in Gaza escalated following terror attacks by militants in October 7, 2023, resulting in numerous casualties. Subsequent attacks have claimed more lives, with concerns growing over a famine in the region, prompting various nations, including the UK, to pledge humanitarian assistance.
