Major high street bank is slashing opening hours at 40 branches

The Co-operative Bank is set to cut opening hours across 40 of its branches from next year.

Some of the impacted branches will see opening times slashed by up to three hours a week from January 2026, while 18 banks will close for one day during the working week.

For example, its Brighton branch used to be open from 9am until 5pm, Monday to Friday, but its new weekday hours will now be 9.30am until 2.30pm.

The Caerphilly branch currently operates 9am until 4pm, Monday to Friday, but its hours will be cut to 10am until 2pm and the bank will no longer be open on Wednesdays.

Co-operative Bank, which has 2.5 million customers, has issued an update on its website, explaining that that changes are due to fewer people visiting its branches.

The bank said: “Like many other high street banks, we’ve seen a reduction in customers visiting our branches. More customers are now choosing to use mobile, online or telephone banking.

“Where we have reduced hours during the week, our branch team will still be supporting our customers in these other areas. We’ve made sure that if your branch is closed on a weekday, the next nearest branch will be open.”
