A man is facing charges for the murder of a British tourist who vanished during a night out with friends while vacationing in Greece two decades ago.
Steven Cook, a 20-year-old from Sandbach in Cheshire, went missing in Crete’s Malia resort on September 1, 2005, during his first solo trip abroad. His remains were discovered in 2017 at the bottom of a well by workers, but the case had remained stagnant until recent developments.
Cheshire Police have revealed that they are collaborating with Greek authorities following the emergence of new information. This update came after a lawyer based in Crete, Ioannis Kostantoudakis, who represented Steven’s family when his body was found, disclosed that the ex-wife of another British tourist had come forward.
The ex-wife claimed that her former partner, a 38-year-old, confessed to killing Steven while under the influence of drugs after the body was discovered. According to her, he admitted to engaging in a drunken altercation with a young man in Malia, resulting in the victim’s fatal head injury. She alleged that he disposed of the body in a well following the incident.
Chris Cook, Steven’s elder brother at 50, expressed mixed emotions upon learning this news shortly after the 20th anniversary of the tragedy. He conveyed that the family may not find closure despite potential legal proceedings and outcomes.
This year’s anniversary marked the first time the family commemorated the occasion without their parents, who both passed away in recent years. The case has now been referred to the Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion in Greece for a hearing scheduled on October 21.
According to Mr. Kostantoudakis, Greek law permits a trial in absence of the suspect, though physical presence may be required by the court, triggering a possible extradition request to UK authorities.
Cheshire Police acknowledged the murder charge in Steven Cook’s case and stated that they are actively cooperating with Greek authorities, providing support to Steven’s family through specialized personnel.
Mr. Cook reminisced about his brother, highlighting their shared memories, including attending the 2005 Champions League final where Liverpool triumphed over AC Milan. He described Steven as a beloved individual, emphasizing his positive nature and the affection he garnered from friends and acquaintances.
