A senior citizen initially declared deceased at a hospital in Brazil caused astonishment among morticians when he exhibited signs of life in the morgue after being pronounced dead following resuscitation attempts. The 90-year-old man was admitted for treatment on September 1 and experienced a cardio-respiratory arrest the following morning. Despite efforts to revive him, medical staff concluded he had passed away in the emergency room.
However, upon being transferred to the morgue, relatives were shocked to discover that he was still breathing. Medical examinations confirmed the man was indeed alive, prompting his rehospitalization at the UPA emergency care unit. Sadly, he passed away later that morning.
The unexpected turn of events stirred discussions within the hospital and the local community about the incident. The UPA management assured that no medical errors were identified in the patient’s care, and they pledged full cooperation with investigations by relevant authorities and expert organizations.
Although rare, instances of individuals seemingly returning from the dead have been documented, with some cases occurring even hours after being declared deceased. Medical experts refer to this phenomenon as the Lazarus effect, where individuals show signs of life after cardiac arrest, often shortly after resuscitation efforts end, leading to a false impression of revival. Despite the miraculous appearance, most individuals experiencing the Lazarus effect do not survive for long after blood circulation resumes.
Historically, there have been notable cases of individuals coming back to life after being presumed dead, such as the story of Angelo Hays in 1937. After surviving a motorcycle accident and being mistakenly declared dead, Hays’ ‘resurrection’ garnered attention, leading him to capitalize on his experience with a unique tour.
