“Man Sentenced to Life for Fatal Shooting in Iowa”

A 25-year-old man named Hamza Smajlovic has been given a life sentence without parole for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend’s mother and injuring her father. The incident took place in Des Moines, Iowa, where Smajlovic had previously assaulted his ex-girlfriend, Jasmyn Robison. The tragic event unfolded when Jasmyn decided to end the tumultuous relationship after enduring nine years of turmoil.

During the sentencing, Jasmyn and her family emotionally addressed the court, highlighting the bravery and sacrifice of her mother, Ruth Robison, who lost her life protecting her daughter. Smajlovic, expressing remorse, acknowledged the devastation caused by his actions, acknowledging that multiple lives were irrevocably altered.

Smajlovic, who pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder, was also sentenced to an additional 25 years for the shooting. District Judge Joseph Seidlin emphasized the gravity of the crimes, describing the shootings as deliberate acts aimed at taking the lives of two innocent individuals. The judge underscored the profound impact on the Robison family, noting the enduring trauma inflicted on both Ruth and Tony Robison.
