“Mental Health Linked to High Cardiovascular Risks”

A study reveals that approximately 49,000 individuals under 75 years old in the UK succumb to heart and circulatory diseases annually. Recent research sheds light on the significant impact of mental health on personal cardiovascular risk.

The Lancet recently published a report that gathered insights from leading researchers to examine disparities in cardiovascular health among individuals with mental health conditions. The study focused on common challenges such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and PTSD.

The findings highlight the heightened risks faced by individuals with major depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, and phobia-related anxiety, with reported increased risks ranging from 50% to nearly 100%. Notably, those diagnosed with schizophrenia face the highest risk, while those with PTSD also experience a significant threat.

Professor Viola Vaccarino from Emory University emphasized the necessity for healthcare system improvements to address the close link between cardiovascular and psychological health. Over 40% of individuals with cardiovascular disease also have a mental health condition, underscoring the need for a multidisciplinary care approach involving specialists, social workers, and nursing staff.

The study emphasizes the intricate relationship between mental health conditions and the body’s stress responses, particularly the impact of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis on immune response and metabolism. Dysregulation of these systems may contribute to chronic cardiovascular risks, including elevated blood pressure and inflammation.

While uncertainties persist, the study advocates for an integrated approach to cater to the complex needs of individuals with mental health conditions for optimal care. Cardiovascular disease, characterized by heart and blood vessel conditions, is a leading cause of death and disability in the UK, with preventive measures like healthy lifestyle choices playing a crucial role in mitigating risks.
