Popular deodorant brand Mitchum faced backlash as users reported experiencing a burning sensation after using the product. Concerns were raised on social media platforms like TikTok, with numerous individuals sharing their discomfort from using the Mitchum 48hr Powder Fresh roll-on deodorant, which took weeks to heal.
One user even mentioned considering calling an ambulance due to the intense stinging sensation. Mitchum acknowledged the issue, attributing it to a manufacturing process change affecting eight of its products sold in the UK, Ireland, and South Africa, leading to adverse reactions in consumers.
Following a social media outcry detailing similar symptoms, the company issued a statement on Instagram apologizing for the impact and the delay in investigating the matter. They clarified that while the formula remained unchanged, a modification in the manufacturing process of a raw material caused the adverse skin reactions in some users. The post assured customers that the affected batches were being removed from shelves after reverting to their original production methods.
Pharmaceutical expert Penny Ward from King’s College London highlighted potential irritants in the new formula, including acetyl cedrene and vanillin, commonly found in fragrances. Ward advised discontinuing use if a reaction occurred and opting for an alternative product once the skin had healed.
Affected products include Mitchum Women Roll On 100ml variants like Powder Fresh, Shower Fresh, Unscented, Pure Fresh, Flower Fresh, and Mitchum Men Roll On 100ml in Ice Fresh, Clean Control, and Sport.
