NatWest has revealed intentions to shut down an additional 55 branches nationwide this year, comprising 52 traditional high street locations and three mobile banking vans, citing the surge in online service usage by customers.
These closures, including NatWest branches in various areas such as Bridgwater, Chippenham, Cirencester, and Trowbridge in England and Wales, are set to occur between September and October 2025. Local residents have expressed discontent over the closures, especially highlighting concerns for vulnerable customers who heavily rely on in-person banking services for managing their finances.
In response to the criticism, NatWest defended the decision, noting that more than 80% of active current account holders now engage with digital services and over 97% of retail accounts are initiated online. The banking landscape has witnessed the closure of 6,161 branches since January 2015, averaging approximately 53 closures per month, as per data from Which?.
Lloyds Banking Group, encompassing Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland, has closed down 1,216 sites, while Barclays has recorded the most significant reduction with 1,227 branch closures.
A spokesperson from NatWest emphasized the increasing digital banking usage among customers, highlighting that significant investments exceeding £20 million are earmarked for network enhancements in 2025. The focus remains on improving customer service, branch aesthetics, environmental sustainability, and promoting shared solutions like the Post Office and Banking Hubs.
