An urgent broadband advisory has been issued to households in the UK, emphasizing the importance of checking their Wi-Fi routers promptly. Sky’s NOW internet service has issued a recent alert due to certain older internet devices losing support for crucial security updates.
Customers are currently receiving messages prompting them to conduct simple checks and modify passwords to minimize “the risk of security threats.”
It is essential to note that all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) release patches, bug fixes, and software upgrades for routers to ensure their smooth operation and safeguard against cyber threats.
Regrettably, certain NOW products are set to lose this type of support in the upcoming weeks and months.
NOW has advised that although hubs will remain functional, users should change the Hub admin password without delay if they have one at home.
The company has also stated that no replacements will be provided in case of a device malfunction. Those encountering technical difficulties will need to transition to Sky’s products or switch to a different ISP entirely.
An email from NOW, as reported by ISPreview, mentioned, “Please note, your Hub is no longer receiving security and service updates, or will stop receiving security updates by 2025. However, your Hub will continue to work as normal and will keep you connected to the internet.”
The email further recommends changing the Hub admin password as a precaution against security risks. This change will not affect the Wi-Fi password but only the password used to access Hub details. Starting July 31st, 2025, if a Hub malfunctions, a replacement will not be available.
Customers concerned about these developments are encouraged to contact NOW to explore available options. Sky offers a variety of alternative products, with prices starting from £26 per month. The company’s internet speeds range from a basic 61Mbps to a high-speed 900Mbps, allowing users to download a movie in under 40 seconds.
