“Octopus Energy’s ‘4pm Rule’ Saves UK Homes Energy & Money”

Octopus Energy is advising UK households to follow a suggested ‘4pm rule’ as temperatures drop and energy bills remain high. This rule, also endorsed by Money Saving Expert (MSE) founder Martin Lewis, aims to help retain heat and potentially reduce costs.

Initially introduced on ITV’s The Martin Lewis Money Show, the ‘4pm rule’ remains relevant amidst the ongoing financial challenges faced by homeowners in the UK. Despite being filmed in November 2022, experts from MSE affirm that the tips are still effective.

The strategy involves implementing a specific routine daily to optimize heat retention in homes without excessive reliance on expensive central heating. Octopus Energy explains on its website that by closing blinds or curtains before dusk, households can reduce heat loss by up to 17%.

Additionally, drawing curtains in front of external doors can prevent cold air from entering and help trap warmth indoors. The energy provider recommends keeping curtains open during sunny periods to utilize free solar heat, and closing them after sunset to maintain warmth and keep out the cold. For added insulation during colder months, curtain liners or a shower curtain can be installed to enhance existing curtains.

As the sun sets around 4pm today, experts suggest closing curtains to preserve indoor warmth, potentially delaying the need to switch on heating systems.

Martin Lewis previously shared similar advice on using energy-efficient curtains, particularly thermal-lined ones, to retain heat efficiently. By strategically opening curtains to allow sunlight in and closing them when it gets dark, households can better insulate their living spaces. Opting for heavy, thermal-lined curtains made from materials like velvet or wool can effectively block cold drafts from windows.

The efficacy of thermal curtains lies in their specialized lining, which traps air and slows down heat loss. To optimize results, ensure that curtains fit snugly around windows, extending a few inches past the frame and reaching the floor. Adding a pelmet or valance at the top of the curtain rod can further enhance insulation by preventing air circulation over the top.

By following these tips on selecting and using thermal curtains effectively, households can enhance their energy efficiency and reduce heating costs during colder seasons.
