Ricky Megee embarked on a journey through the Australian Outback to kickstart a new chapter in his life. However, his good deed of picking up a hitchhiker along the way spiraled into a harrowing experience. Megee found himself drugged and abandoned in one of the world’s harshest environments, leading to a perplexing and infamous unsolved case in Australia. In 2006, a group of young cattle farmhands stumbled upon a skeletal figure wandering the isolated desert, later identified as Ricky Megee. He had vanished without a trace 10 weeks earlier while traveling from Brisbane to Port Hedland to pursue a fresh start.
Facing a troubled past with personal struggles, including the loss of his father and encounters with the law, Megee sought a new beginning in Port Hedland. His journey entailed traversing 3000km of treacherous Outback terrain, including the formidable Tanami Desert, known as one of Australia’s most remote regions. Despite the challenges, Megee embarked on the arduous trip in his reliable 2001 Mitsubishi Challenger, anticipating a two to three-day drive.
Amid the journey, circumstances took a dark turn. Megee’s recollection of events remained uncertain. Initially citing a car breakdown, he later mentioned encountering an Aboriginal hitchhiker who allegedly drugged him, leaving him disoriented and stranded. In a subsequent narrative shift in his 2010 autobiography co-authored by Greg McLean, Megee described encountering three men on the roadside who led him into a perilous situation involving drugging and abandonment.
Regardless of the varying accounts, Megee endured an agonizing 71-day ordeal in the desert, disoriented and battling extreme conditions with limited resources. Surviving on a diet of snakes, insects, and water sources he could find, Megee resorted to unconventional methods to sustain himself, including consuming leeches and raw wildlife.
Upon his eventual rescue, Megee, significantly emaciated but surprisingly hydrated, was rushed to a hospital for treatment. Despite his miraculous survival, skepticism arose regarding the authenticity of his story, with media and authorities questioning its veracity due to Megee’s past and conflicting narratives. However, Megee stood by his account, emphasizing the ordeal’s profound impact on his perspective on life and resilience.
Although Megee’s survival appeared miraculous, experts pointed out the adaptability of humans in wilderness settings, noting the potential for prolonged survival under harsh conditions. Currently residing in Dubai and engaged in construction management, Megee aspires to engage in humanitarian work, attributing his survival to a higher purpose of aiding others in need.
