Outrage over £161,000 Ticket Price for World Cup Semi-Final

Football enthusiasts expressed strong disapproval last evening when a ticket for the 2026 World Cup semi-final was listed for sale at a staggering price of £161,000 on an official FIFA resale platform. This revelation sparked anger among supporters just before the much-anticipated tournament draw scheduled for this Friday. Neal Weekes, a devoted England fan, denounced the exorbitant prices, labeling them as scandalous and disgraceful.

With the excitement building up for the tournament draw, fans from England and Scotland are eagerly anticipating to discover their respective match schedules in the US, Canada, and Mexico next summer. However, the eye-watering prices on FIFA’s resale platform have left many shocked. FIFA, the governing body of football worldwide, runs an official ticket resale platform to regulate the secondary market, charging both sellers and buyers a 15% fee.

Currently, a single Category 2 ticket for the second semi-final in Atlanta on July 15 is priced at £161,000, excluding an additional ‘facilitation fee’ of £24,355, bringing the total cost to a hefty £185,485. Surprisingly, this price surpasses that of the first semi-final in Dallas by a significant margin. Weekes criticized the potential profits FIFA could make from such transactions, highlighting the concerning aspects of football’s commercialization.

Weekes, accompanied by his friend Fil Sollof, both seasoned football enthusiasts, are gearing up for their seventh World Cup attendance. Their previous experience in Qatar, where they visited all eight stadiums in and around Doha, has set the stage for what to expect in terms of ticket prices for the upcoming World Cup matches next year. The tournament, featuring 48 teams for the first time, is scheduled to take place in June and July, with countries like Wales and Northern Ireland vying for a spot alongside England and Scotland.

As anticipation builds for the draw in Washington DC this Friday, potential matchups with first-time finalists like Cape Verde, Uzbekistan, Jordan, or Curacao loom for England and Scotland. The pricing for the 2026 final tickets ranges from £1,535 to £5,089, signaling a significant investment for avid football fans. Looking back at the previous World Cup in Qatar, where a Category 1 ticket for the final match was priced at £1,214, fans were treated to an exciting showdown between Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi, culminating in a thrilling 3–3 draw before Argentina emerged victorious on penalties.

Efforts to reach FIFA for comments on the ticket pricing have been made but remain unanswered.
