Parents of Teen in Heart Surgery Tragedy Begged to Stop Resuscitation

The parents of a 15-year-old boy who passed away following heart surgery revealed they pleaded with medical staff to cease resuscitation efforts. Antonio Galisi-Swallow, who had Down’s syndrome, autism, and ADHD, underwent pulmonary valve replacement surgery in September 2021 due to tetralogy of fallot, a congenital heart condition he had since birth. An inquest at Wakefield Coroner’s Court disclosed that Antonio had a previous heart surgery in 2006.

While recovering in the pediatric intensive care unit at Leeds’ Children’s Hospital post-surgery, Antonio experienced complications such as a high temperature and low blood pressure, leading to his unfortunate demise on October 7, 2021. Antonio’s mother, Melina Galisi, shared a heartfelt poem in court, expressing her deep love and memories of her son, describing him as a source of strength and connection in their lives.

Ms. Galisi detailed the events leading up to Antonio’s surgery, mentioning challenges faced during the hospital stay, including a lack of private room accommodations and concerns about his care. She expressed regret over perceived inadequacies in his treatment, recounting distressing moments before and during Antonio’s decline, including medical staff’s decisions and the emotional toll on the family.

Dr. Imran Kassai, a consultant at Leeds General Infirmary, testified that Antonio could have been weaned off ventilation and sedation the day after surgery without complications. Dr. Ramesh Kumar, the surgeon who performed the operation, shared his observations on Antonio’s postoperative condition. The inquest is ongoing to further investigate the circumstances surrounding Antonio’s tragic passing.
