Pharmacists nationwide offer guidance on a range of illnesses and medications, including addressing concerns about side effects. They can also refer you to a GP or another healthcare professional if necessary.
Moreover, pharmacists can provide prescription medications for specific conditions without requiring a GP visit or appointment. Known as Pharmacy First, this service covers seven particular conditions, as highlighted by NHS guidance.
In a statement, NHS UK stated, “Your pharmacist can offer treatment or prescribe medicine for seven common conditions without a GP visit. Consider consulting your local pharmacy team first.”
While pharmacists can dispense prescription medications for numerous conditions, age restrictions apply for each condition. Even if you do not meet the age criteria for certain medications, pharmacists can still provide advice, treatment, or referrals as deemed appropriate. It is advisable to contact pharmacies in advance to confirm their ability to provide prescription medicines.
Certain pharmacies may offer the contraceptive pill free of charge and without a prescription. Alternatively, individuals aged 16 and over can purchase the emergency contraceptive pill, while those aged 18 and over can buy the progesterone-only pill if not available at their local pharmacy.
