“Poundland Completes Restructuring, Closes 150 Stores”

Poundland recently completed a restructuring plan that led to the closure of nearly 150 stores and the elimination of 2,200 jobs. The discount retailer now operates 651 stores, down from approximately 800, and its workforce has decreased from 14,200 to about 12,000 employees. As part of the overhaul, Poundland also shut down two warehouses located in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands.

In June of last year, Poundland was acquired by investment firm Gordon Brothers for a nominal fee of £1. The company avoided administration after receiving approval for its rescue strategy, which included store closures, in the High Court in August. Poundland announced that its restructuring initiative has been completed, but emphasized that there is still more work ahead to restore the business to a stable position.

Looking at the latest financial figures, Poundland reported a 2.9% decline in like-for-like underlying sales in the quarter ending December 28. Despite this, comparable store sales by volume increased by 2% as the company focused on reducing prices to reinforce its discount positioning. The underlying earnings for the first quarter rose to £17.3 million, exceeding expectations by £8.4 million.

Barry Williams, the managing director of Poundland, acknowledged the progress made in revitalizing the business with lower prices and a more focused product range. However, he emphasized that there is still significant work to be done. The company’s strategy for 2026 will concentrate on offering the product ranges and price simplicity that customers desire across all departments, including clothing, homewares, and grocery items.

Poundland revamped its pricing structure by reintroducing a straightforward £1, £2, and £3 pricing system for groceries across all its UK stores, with the majority of grocery items priced at £1. The company also discontinued certain product categories such as frozen foods and some chilled ranges, in addition to discontinuing its online services. Furthermore, Poundland is relaunching its in-house designed Pep&Co clothing range in UK and Ireland stores, with 90% of items priced below £10, starting next week.

To emphasize the value of its offerings, Poundland is launching a nationwide advertising campaign next week.
