The Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina encountered a power outage just 10 minutes after commencing, causing a temporary pause in the proceedings. The curling events kicked off the Games, but participants had to wait due to the sudden loss of electricity.
Although the official Opening Ceremony at the San Siro is scheduled for Friday, some competitions have already begun. The initial mixed doubles round robin matches in curling had to be halted due to a power failure at the Olympic Ice Stadium.
Officials stopped play during the first end of the match between Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds against Norway. Despite the interruption, the British curlers maintained a positive attitude, with Dodds even finding humor in the situation while officials worked to resolve the issue.
Commentator Steve Cram from the BBC, amused by the incident, mentioned the power cut at the stadium and the pause in play due to the scoring screens turning off. The audience reacted with cheer when the lights came back on after a brief delay of approximately five minutes, allowing the competition to resume.
Dodds and Mouat clinched an 8-6 victory to kick off the round robin phase on a positive note, with Mouat downplaying the disruption, describing it as a fun moment akin to a dance party in the venue’s great atmosphere with top-notch ice conditions.
The UK’s most successful Winter Games in terms of medals were in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 with five medals. UK Sport anticipates potentially winning up to eight medals following sustained investment through the National Lottery and government support, totaling over £32.5 million across the current four-year cycle for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
Eve Muirhead OBE, a gold medalist from Beijing 2022, has transitioned to a leadership role within Team GB as Chef de Mission for Milan-Cortina 2026. She expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities, highlighting the opportunity for the UK to challenge the existing norms despite potential challenges in accessing snow and ice compared to other competitors.
