Termed a “cannibal” solar storm, this rare event occurs when two massive clouds of charged particles from the sun merge, intensifying the impact on Earth’s magnetic field.

Forecasters predict the geomagnetic storm could reach dangerous G3 (strong) levels by early Tuesday, with the possibility of escalating to a severe G4 storm, posing a significant risk to the power infrastructure in the northern United States. This event coincides with the UK entering “meteorological autumn,” increasing the chance of thunderstorms.

The solar storm’s arrival poses significant risks to vital infrastructure, including the potential for power grid disturbances due to voltage fluctuations and transformer damage, potentially leading to widespread blackouts. Additionally, disruptions to radio transmissions, GPS navigation systems, and satellite communications could affect millions of Americans who rely on these services daily.

While there are potential hazards, skywatchers can look forward to witnessing the Northern Lights in states such as Alaska, Montana, and New York, extending as far south as Idaho and Illinois. The optimal viewing window is expected between 2 am and 5 am ET on Tuesday for the most vibrant celestial displays.

A geomagnetic storm results from the sun releasing particles, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), which interact with Earth’s magnetic field, causing it to oscillate. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center anticipates the storm starting as a G1 to G2 event on Monday night, potentially escalating to strong G3 or severe G4 storm levels.

The solar storm is also expected to generate an S1 radiation storm, posing risks to satellites and space missions. While widespread power outages are unlikely, high-latitude regions may experience grid issues, with potential localized blackouts affecting homes and businesses. Solar flares accompanying the storm could disrupt radio signals and aviation operations.
