“Revive Your Pillows with White Vinegar: Expert Tips”

During the summer months, pillows are prone to becoming discolored or stained due to increased perspiration. However, there is a simple method to restore them to their original appearance.

Carrie Higgins, the author of the book “Organisation Hacks” and founder of Making Lemonade, has shared effective tips on washing pillows, emphasizing that they can harbor bacteria and mold.

According to Carrie, pillows accumulate various substances over the hours spent on them each night. However, rejuvenating discolored pillows doesn’t have to be time-consuming or costly. Carrie recommends using white vinegar as a potent stain remover.

Despite its unconventional nature, vinegar is a powerful natural cleanser that can efficiently break down organic stains like sweat, oils, and residue commonly found on pillows. Additionally, vinegar is antibacterial and acts as a natural deodorizer, eliminating bacteria and unpleasant odors from the fabric.

Carrie attests to the effectiveness of vinegar, stating that even heavily soiled pillows only require one wash with vinegar to look like new.

To commence the cleaning process, it is essential to check the pillow label to verify if it is suitable for machine washing. Certain materials, such as memory foam, may not be suitable for this method.

When washing, avoid overcrowding the washing machine and wash two pillows at a time. Add 250ml of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment along with your regular detergent. Carrie recommends using fragrance-free and dye-free laundry detergent for best results.

Select the hottest water temperature recommended on the pillow care label and run a delicate cycle. After washing, ensure to spin the pillows to remove excess moisture.

Following the wash, your pillows should appear clean, white, and stain-free. For any stubborn marks, consider running them through a second wash if needed.

To dry the pillows, use a tumble dryer on a low-heat setting and add wool dryer balls to restore fluffiness. Alternatively, air-dry them outdoors to benefit from natural sunlight, which can brighten fabrics and help remove stains.

Ensure the pillows are completely dry before use to prevent mold growth and odors. By following these steps, your pillows will be refreshed, providing a comfortable night’s sleep on fresh bedding.

Carrie concludes by mentioning that your pillows will look beautiful and ready to be displayed once again.
