Evacuations have been carried out in Romanian villages after a drone attack targeted a ship on the Danube River amid escalating concerns of potential conflict involving Vladimir Putin and NATO.
The MT Orinda came under attack while unloading petroleum gas on the border between Romania and Ukraine earlier this week. The incident led to significant fires as numerous individuals were on board the vessel.
Russia executed a large-scale bombing operation overnight deploying two Iskander-M ballistic missiles along with 128 shrike and decoy drones in various locations across Ukraine. The attack took place while French President Emmanuel Macron was hosting Volodymyr Zelensky at Elysee Palace in France, where discussions were held regarding a potential deal to provide 100 Rafale fighter jets to Kyiv, Ukraine.
An announcement by Tulcea University of Technology in Romania shared on Facebook stated: “At this moment, there is an ongoing fire on the LPG transport ship, and Ukrainian authorities are actively responding to the situation.
“After assessing the risks and receiving information from Ukrainian authorities, the decision has been made to lift the evacuation order for the residents of Ceatalchioi village starting at 09:00. Therefore, the 231 residents who either self-evacuated or were evacuated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs can now return to their homes.
“The potential risk posed by the ship’s fire has been deemed very low for the Ceatalchioi area, considering that a portion of the gas has been consumed through combustion, with only a single visible flame remaining, which Ukrainian authorities are addressing. However, the risk remains high for the Plauru locality.”
