Rory McIlroy was caught uttering a curse word on live TV during The Open, prompting a quick apology from Sky Sports. The Northern Irish golfer, seeking his second Claret Jug in front of his home fans, showed his frustration after a wayward shot on the par-4 15th hole.
Commentators promptly apologized on-air due to McIlroy’s visible disappointment. This incident took place during his second round playing with Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood and former world number one Justin Thomas.
Following a strong drive on the 15th tee, McIlroy’s second shot fell short and rolled away from the green, triggering his outburst.
He was heard saying, “Ahh, I [inaudible] the f*** out of it,” with microphones capturing the remark near the green. Sky Sports commentator Laura Davies expressed disappointment at the missed opportunity after a good tee shot had set up a favorable position for McIlroy.
Colleague Andrew Coltart also acknowledged McIlroy’s language slip and issued an apology. McIlroy, who secured the career Grand Slam with a playoff win at the Masters earlier this year, faces immense pressure at Royal Portrush, where he set a course record of 61 as a teenager in 2005.
Having discussed the emotional toll of competing at home, especially after a disappointing showing in 2019, McIlroy entered this year’s tournament in good form. Despite not topping the leaderboard, his game has been steady, with a solid 69 in the second round keeping him in contention.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, recent PGA Championship winner, is also in the mix alongside Brian Harman, while defending champion Xander Schauffele and 2019 winner Shane Lowry are trailing behind.
McIlroy remains a fan favorite as he aims for his sixth major title and first Claret Jug since 2014. With the final rounds ahead, all eyes are on Portrush to see if McIlroy can handle the pressure and deliver a memorable victory on home turf.
