The royal event commenced as the Prince and Princess of Wales welcomed the German president and his wife to the UK for a significant state visit. Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Budenbender were greeted at Heathrow Airport by the royal couple on behalf of the King. The arrival included a carpet lining party by The King’s Colour Squadron, Royal Air Force, to welcome the president’s plane adorned with the colors of the German flag.
During the welcoming ceremony, Prince William and Kate exchanged greetings with the president and his wife, with Ms. Budenbender engaging in conversation with Kate. The royal couple, alongside other dignitaries, engaged in cordial interactions on the red carpet at the airport.
Following the airport welcome, William and Kate traveled to Windsor for a carriage ride to the castle. Subsequently, a ceremonial welcome awaited Mr. Steinmeier at the castle, with King Charles, Queen Camilla, William, and Kate in attendance. Later in the evening, a grand state banquet was held at St George’s Hall in the castle, where the German leader was honored.
A Christmas tree adorned with lights and decorations in St George’s Hall set the ambiance for the banquet. The visit’s agenda also included a private flower-laying ceremony by Mr. Steinmeier at the late Queen Elizabeth II’s tomb, followed by a volunteering showcase with the King and Queen.
This state visit marked a historic occasion, being the first German president’s state visit in 27 years and the fifth from Germany since 1958. President Steinmeier’s itinerary also included meetings with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, UK and German business leaders, as well as an address to Parliament. Notably, a poignant wreath-laying ceremony at the Coventry Cathedral ruins was planned, commemorating the Coventry Blitz anniversary.
