Skiing Star Lindsey Vonn Updates Fans Post-Surgery

Skiing icon Lindsey Vonn provided an update on her condition via social media following her third surgery post a tragic accident that shattered her Olympic aspirations at Milan‑Cortina. The 41-year-old American endured a leg fracture during the Milan Cortina Games, necessitating immediate medical attention after a harrowing crash, just days after tearing her ACL.

During the women’s downhill event, Vonn, representing Team USA, collided with a gate, leading to a loss of balance and a dramatic fall down the slope within seconds of her run. She was promptly treated on-site before being airlifted to a nearby medical facility for further care.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday evening, Vonn shared, “I underwent my 3rd surgery today, and it was a success. The definition of success has taken on a whole new meaning for me recently. Progress may be gradual, but I remain optimistic about my recovery. Grateful for the exceptional medical team, my supportive friends and family, and the overwhelming love and encouragement from people worldwide.”

She expressed admiration for her fellow Team USA athletes and teammates, acknowledging their inspiring performances that provided her with a source of motivation and joy.

Following confirmation that Vonn required multiple surgeries to mend her leg, she has now completed her third operation. While a prolonged rehabilitation period lies ahead, there is a possibility that she could return to skiing within a year.

Federica Brignone, a fellow skier who endured severe leg fractures and a torn ACL at the 2025 Italian Championships, made a remarkable comeback within just 10 months, competing against Vonn at Cortina’s Olympia piste.

Andrea Panzeri, head of the Medical Commission of the Italian Winter Sports Federation, emphasized the challenges athletes face with such injuries, noting that age could impact recovery but highlighting Brignone’s successful recovery as a beacon of hope.

Orthopaedic surgeon Filippo Pierfrancesco Calanna from Milan’s Gaetano Pini Orthopaedic and Trauma Centre pointed out that while age might slow down recovery, Vonn’s exceptional physical attributes could play a vital role in her recuperation. He cautioned about the potential development of arthritis due to the injury, which could lead to joint issues in the future.

Vonn’s history of previous leg injuries, including a partial knee implant, may influence the duration of her rehabilitation process, posing additional challenges to her recovery journey.
