“Starmer Criticizes Brexit Claims, Calls for Stronger China Engagement”

Keir Starmer has raised concerns about the exaggerated claims of Brexit and highlighted a failure to engage with China in a significant address on the UK’s global connections.

During his annual speech on foreign policy in London on Monday night, the Prime Minister emphasized that under Labour, the UK’s position on the world stage has been strengthened. He praised groundbreaking trade agreements, migration pacts, and substantial commercial deals.

In a world becoming increasingly perilous, having robust international ties was described as an act of patriotism by Starmer. He criticized those promoting a negative, isolationist approach, indirectly targeting the Tories and Reform for their stance on the European Convention of Human Rights and the Green Party’s desire to exit the NATO defense alliance.

Speaking at the Lord Mayor’s Banquet at the Guildhall, Starmer stated, “It offers grievance rather than hope. A declinist vision of a lesser Britain – not a Great Britain.” He emphasized the need to face the challenges posed by a chaotic and more dangerous world directly, instead of shying away.

Starmer asserted that in current times, the UK must look outward with renewed purpose and pride to succeed. He highlighted the importance of internationalism as a form of patriotism.

The Prime Minister also stressed the necessity for the UK to ensure its relationship with the EU benefits its citizens. He acknowledged Brexit as a democratic expression but criticized the way it was marketed and executed, noting unfulfilled promises and ongoing consequences.

On the topic of China, Starmer recognized the country’s immense scale and ambition, along with the security threats it presents. He emphasized the need for a China policy that acknowledges these realities and criticized the lack of consistent engagement with the second-largest economy globally as a dereliction of duty.

Since taking office, the Labour government has secured significant trade agreements with the EU, India, and the US.
