“Student Tortured, Burned Alive Over Cryptocurrency Wealth”

A young student was reportedly subjected to torture in connection with his father’s cryptocurrency wealth before being burned alive while trapped in the back seat of his family’s Mercedes. The victim, identified as Danilo Kuzmin, 21, a student in Vienna, was allegedly attacked in the underground parking area of the upscale Sofitel Hotel by individuals, including a fellow student from Ukraine to whom he had disclosed details about his father’s crypto assets.

Authorities suspect that Danilo was assaulted and interrogated at the hotel’s car park, where he was coerced into revealing access codes for his father’s two cryptocurrency accounts after enduring hours of torture. Following the ordeal, he was transported to the Donaustadt district in Vienna, where the car he was in was set on fire with him inside. Reports suggest that the tragic incident was orchestrated as a trap to exploit Danilo’s family wealth, as he had fled from a conflict zone.

This horrific incident bears resemblance to a recent case in Dubai involving a Russian crypto couple who were found dead in the desert. Forensic examinations on Danilo’s body revealed extensive burn injuries, severe blunt force trauma, including head wounds and broken teeth. Authorities initiated an investigation after receiving missing person reports from the victim’s family and close associates when he abruptly stopped communicating.

Law enforcement made significant progress in the case by identifying and apprehending two Ukrainian suspects, aged 19 and 45, who were arrested in Ukraine shortly after Danilo’s body was discovered. Both Austrian and Ukrainian media sources have disclosed that the younger suspect was a former university peer of the victim.

CCTV footage from the Sofitel hotel on the day of the incident captured multiple individuals surrounding Danilo in the underground car park, while witnesses reported hearing a disturbance and discovering a substantial bloodstain later. Investigators recovered a melted fuel container in the car, emitting a gasoline odor even though the vehicle ran on diesel fuel. Autopsy results indicated extensive burns on Danilo’s body, along with evidence of severe physical trauma.

Authorities confirmed the violent nature of Danilo’s death, pointing to deliberate actions to conceal the crime scene. Emergency responders located his body only after extinguishing the flames, ruling out accidental causes due to the presence of petrol on the diesel-operated vehicle. Further evidence from a Vienna petrol station revealed one of the suspects purchasing petrol before the fatal incident.

The suspects are not expected to be extradited to Austria as Ukrainian officials are seeking to handle the criminal proceedings in their jurisdiction. Austrian investigators suspect a financial motive behind the crime, noting discrepancies in the victim’s family cryptocurrency accounts and the possession of a substantial amount of US dollars by one of the detained individuals. The suspects remain in custody in Odessa, following a court order for a 40-day detention period.
