Subway will introduce jacket potatoes nationwide after a successful trial run. The new menu addition, playfully named ‘Spudway’, will offer fluffy baked potatoes with various toppings such as cheese and baked beans, tuna mayo, Meatball Marinara, and chicken tikka.
This decision follows a survey of 2,000 adults, revealing that individuals will consume over 8,000 baked potatoes in their lifetime, with a quarter expressing a desire to have one daily. The most popular toppings were found to be cheese and beans (56%), followed by tuna mayonnaise (36%) and bacon (23%).
Cathy Goodwin, interim director of culinary & innovation at Subway EMEA, commented on the nation’s unparalleled love for jacket potatoes. She stated that the strong demand and enthusiasm shown during the trial confirmed that Spudway deserved a permanent spot on the menu.
The study also uncovered that 15% of participants are obsessed with jacket potatoes, with 23% considering having one for breakfast. Notably, 10% prefer ketchup on their spuds, while 40% enjoy experimenting with different toppings occasionally.
Interestingly, 23% of individuals have argued over what constitutes the perfect jacket potato, with 41% insisting that baked beans are essential and 19% disapproving of microwaving instead of oven-baking.
Moreover, 21% admitted to secretly judging others based on their choice of toppings, while 34% find eating a cold jacket potato unappealing. Surprisingly, 78% usually consume the skin of their jacket potato.
Among the survey participants, 15% believe that jacket potato season officially begins on September 1st. Cathy emphasized that Spudway potatoes are made with British potatoes, Irish salted butter, a double portion of cheese, and are customizable with various toppings, including Subway’s iconic Meatball Marinara and classic Cheese & Beans options.
