Teenager convicted in fatal stabbing of 16-year-old in Stretford

A 14-year-old teenager, known as L’Vaion Peniston, has been identified as the perpetrator who fatally stabbed 16-year-old Kennie Carter in Stretford during a retaliatory conflict. The incident, driven by vengeance following a prior altercation, led to Peniston’s conviction for murder at Manchester Crown Court when he was 16. He received a youth sentence equivalent to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years.

Initially, Peniston’s identity was protected due to legal restrictions related to his age. However, after turning 18, the reporting restrictions were lifted, allowing his name to be disclosed. During sentencing, Mr. Justice Goose emphasized the alarming trend of knife-related violence among young individuals in urban areas, impacting both victims and perpetrators.

Kennie’s mother, Joan Dixon, expressed that no punishment could alleviate the pain of losing her son and criticized the lack of remorse shown by the individual responsible for Kennie’s death. Three other teenagers involved in the incident were acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter. The trial revealed details of a clash between Kennie’s friends and the defendants, culminating in the fatal stabbing.

On January 22, 2022, the defendants arrived in Stretford seeking revenge, leading to the tragic encounter with Kennie. Despite efforts to save him by bystanders, Kennie succumbed to his injuries. Peniston, referred to as Boy A in court proceedings, admitted to the stabbing but claimed self-defense, a defense that was rejected by the jury, resulting in a murder conviction.

Kennie’s mother’s heartbreaking statement conveyed the devastating impact of his untimely death on their family, highlighting the enduring trauma caused by senseless violence. The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the devastating consequences of youth violence and the need for preventive measures to safeguard communities.
