A violent altercation unfolded in a Tesco parking lot where a man viciously attacked another individual with a knife. Pavel Stefanovic instigated the assault after being confronted by a fellow Lithuanian at the Meir Park store in Stoke. The altercation escalated as Stefanovic brandished a Stanley knife, inflicting multiple cuts on the victim’s hand, arm, legs, and nose, according to Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Following the incident, Stefanovic, aged 39 and residing on Charnwood Road, Meir, was sentenced to 29 months in prison with the likelihood of deportation. The prosecution revealed that the victim and his wife encountered Stefanovic while shopping at Tesco on December 30, 2022, recognizing him from a YouTube video. An interaction ensued, leading to Stefanovic becoming increasingly aggressive and requesting to converse outside.
As the couple proceeded to the car park with Stefanovic, he revealed the concealed knife when they reached a secluded area surrounded by foliage. Subsequently, Stefanovic threatened and attacked the victim, causing injuries that required medical attention. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he received treatment for lacerations and puncture wounds sustained during the assault.
Stefanovic admitted guilt to charges of unlawful wounding, possession of bladed articles in public, and failure to surrender to court. His criminal history in Lithuania, where he served a five-year sentence for a knife-related offense in 2006, was also disclosed during the court proceedings. Mark Hemming, representing Stefanovic, emphasized the time spent in custody awaiting trial and the potential consequences of a sentence exceeding 12 months leading to deportation.
Judge Richard McConaghy condemned Stefanovic’s actions, deeming them severe and warranting immediate imprisonment. The judge highlighted the unprovoked nature of the attack, emphasizing the threat posed by Stefanovic’s possession and use of knives in a public setting. Additionally, a deprivation order was issued for both knives involved in the incident as part of the sentencing.
