“Tragic Pit Bull Attack Claims Toddler’s Life in Zante”

A tragic incident occurred in Zante, Greece, where a two-year-old boy lost his life after being attacked by a pit bull. The child, accompanied by his father and British mother, had returned home from shopping when the dog attacked him, causing severe bites to his face and head.

Despite being rushed to the General Hospital of Zakynthos and receiving medical attention, the young boy could not be saved. Reports indicate that the boy’s mother is also undergoing treatment for shock following the devastating event.

Authorities have detained the child’s parents in connection with the incident. The pit bull, believed to be a stray that the family had taken in two months prior, was being kept in the garden next to their residence in Agios Leontas. Witnesses mentioned that the parents struggled to free their son from the dog’s grip during the attack.

Michalis Giannakos, head of the national public hospital workers’ union, revealed that the dog had been a stray the family had decided to shelter. He mentioned that the mother was too traumatized to discuss the incident, while the father was cooperating with the police as part of standard procedures.

Following the tragic event, the pit bull has been placed in a shelter under the prosecutor’s orders. Zakynthos Mayor Giorgos Stasinopoulos announced that the dog would undergo monitoring by a veterinarian and a committee from Patras would later determine whether the pit bull should be euthanized or kept in the shelter.

The circumstances leading to the attack and the dog’s behavior prior to the incident remain unclear. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation in compliance with legal requirements.
