“UK Regions Brace for Severe Rain & Thunderstorms”

Dozens of regions in the UK are bracing for a deluge of rainfall today, equivalent to the typical amount for an entire month. In addition to the heavy rainfall, thunderstorms are also predicted.

Southern England and South Wales are expected to be soaked with a significant volume of rain throughout the morning and afternoon. Rainfall levels will vary, with some areas receiving between 20-30mm and others experiencing up to 40-60mm within a span of six to nine hours.

Notably, Plymouth in Devon usually sees around 72mm of rain in September, but today’s forecast suggests nearly 60mm could fall, nearing the monthly average. Similarly, Southampton, under a yellow rain warning, typically receives 60mm of rain in September, with potentially severe downpours anticipated.

The yellow rain warning extends from Cornwall in the South West to South Wales, Herefordshire, and down to West and East Sussex. Additionally, a yellow thunderstorm warning covers a large portion of southern England, reaching East Anglia. Northeast Scotland is under a separate rain weather warning, expiring at 9 pm, while Wales and northern England will face a 15-hour yellow thunderstorm warning starting from 2 am tomorrow.

Coastal areas, particularly along the English Channel coasts, may experience gusty winds and heavy rain. The Met Office cautions that the weather system will move northeast, with heavy showers and possible thunderstorms following, becoming less frequent in the afternoon.

Today’s downpours are expected to affect 42 areas across 13 counties. Official flood alerts have been issued for Devon, particularly around the River Axe area, extending from Axminster to Axmouth.

Residents in the 31 areas under the yellow weather warning are advised to prepare a flood plan and emergency kit, including essential items like a flashlight, batteries, first aid supplies, medications, water, and a battery-powered radio.

While much of the UK will see rainfall in the afternoon, the south coast may experience less precipitation compared to other regions. This is a significant change from the dry weather experienced on Tuesday.

The Met Office’s forecast for today anticipates the spread of heavy rain, followed by blustery showers and potentially thundery conditions. Breezy conditions are expected, especially in the south, with coastal gales possible. Temperatures will remain near average, moderated by strong winds.

Tonight, most regions will see clearer skies, except for the far southwest where persistent rain is forecast for Shetland. Clear spells will develop overnight, with heavy showers expected in the south.
