New data has unveiled the top burglary hotspots in the UK, allowing residents to see if their area is on the list.
The most recent property crime statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that over 245,000 burglaries occurred in the 2024-25 financial year, with nearly 68% targeting residential properties.
As the winter season approaches, experts caution that autumn and winter are prime times for break-ins, with a notable 38% increase in some areas between October and December.
A recent report by insurance brokers Alan Boswell Group has identified burglary hotspots and shared essential tips for securing homes.
The report revealed the council areas with the highest burglary rates per 1,000 daytime population, which includes residents, visitors, and commuters.
On the contrary, some areas have notably low burglary rates per 1,000 daytime population, with diverse locations like Kensington & Chelsea and Middlesbrough featured in the top 10 list.
According to Heath Alexander-Bew, Director at Alan Boswell Group, the risk of burglary is influenced by various local factors rather than just the area’s crime reputation. Strengthening security measures and assessing risks on a property-specific basis are crucial regardless of the location.
Statistics from the ONS show that the majority of burglaries occur at night, with a significant portion happening between midnight and 6am. Afternoons, particularly between noon and 6pm, also see a notable number of burglaries as many homeowners are away at work.
To enhance home security, Alexander-Bew advises reinforcing access points, installing motion-activated lighting, and removing visible valuables from sight to deter potential intruders.
In case of a burglary, it is recommended to call 999 if the crime is ongoing or 101 if it has already occurred, obtaining a crime reference number for insurance purposes.
