Willie Mullins Pays Tribute to Retiring Jumper

Willie Mullins has paid tribute to one of his standout jumpers following the announcement of its retirement. The renowned champion jumps trainer was behind Blue Lord’s successful training, owned by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, recognizable for their distinctive double green silks.

Blue Lord made a remarkable debut under Mullins by winning a maiden hurdle at Punchestown. Originally acquired in France for £30,000, the gelding went on to accumulate over £385,000 in winnings, securing six victories over fences.

Throughout its career, Blue Lord participated in three Cheltenham Festivals, notably falling short of second place in the 2021 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle due to a fall at the last hurdle and finishing third in the Arkle Trophy a year later.

The horse’s notable accomplishments included triumphs at the Irish Arkle in Leopardstown in 2022, the Grade 1 novices’ chase at the Punchestown Festival, and a final victory in the Paddy’s Rewards Club Chase at Leopardstown in December 2022.

Despite a third-place finish in the Champion Chase at Punchestown in 2023 and the Ascot Chase earlier this year, Blue Lord faced setbacks at Aintree and Punchestown, leading to the decision to retire the horse.

In an announcement on X, Simon Munir expressed, “We have chosen to retire Blue Lord, a key figure in the Double Green team, with eight wins, including three Grade 1 victories. The ten-year-old son of Blue Bresil can now enjoy a well-deserved retirement.”

Mullins also shared his sentiments, stating, “Blue Lord has been an exceptional asset for Simon and Isaac, showcasing the double green colors with pride. It was a pleasure to train such a remarkable horse who provided us with many memorable moments on the track. We wish him the best in his retirement.”
