A British Airways flight attendant, identified as Haden Pentecost, avoided imprisonment after being discovered under the influence of drugs and naked on a flight. Pentecost, aged 41, received a six-month suspended prison sentence for performing aviation duties while impaired by drugs. Additionally, he was mandated to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and pay £150 in costs. The incident took place on a flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow in May, where Pentecost was found disheveled and erratic by his cabin manager colleagues before being discovered completely naked in the aircraft’s bathroom.
Upon emerging from the bathroom unclothed and disoriented, Pentecost’s unusual behavior prompted his colleagues to intervene and move him to a vacant seat. The captain was alerted, and medical assistance was requested as Pentecost displayed dilated pupils, confusion about the current year and US president, and excessive water consumption during the flight. Despite causing a significant disruption for the crew, passengers were unaware of Pentecost’s condition. Following the flight’s landing at Heathrow, Pentecost was taken to Hillingdon Hospital for evaluation.
Subsequent blood tests revealed the presence of methamphetamine and amphetamine in Pentecost’s system, leading to his dismissal from British Airways. The court acknowledged the severity of the offense, highlighting Pentecost’s failure to perform pre-flight safety checks, leaving his colleagues to manage the flight unassisted. In his defense, Pentecost’s lawyer explained that he had ingested drugs to enhance a sexual experience, a practice he had engaged in previously, raising questions about the substance’s potency on that occasion.
Despite expressing remorse and acknowledging the impact on his career, Pentecost was spared a jail term by Judge Hannah Duncan, who emphasized the essential safety role of cabin crew and the potential distress caused to passengers by his behavior. Recognizing his guilty plea, previous good conduct, and lack of aggression, the judge reduced Pentecost’s sentence to six months, suspended for a year, and mandated completion of unpaid work within the upcoming year.
