A renowned B&B and café has shut down, dealing a significant blow to the local community. The owner attributed the closure to the challenging location, which resulted in insufficient foot traffic.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations last Friday after serving the community for two and a half years. Owner Sonya Resemblance, who referred to her customers as “beautiful people,” made this announcement, as reported by The Sun.
This closure adds to the ongoing struggles faced by pubs and hospitality establishments across Britain. Economic pressures and evolving consumer behaviors have led to the closure of hundreds of businesses within the sector annually.
The closure of the beloved White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield earlier this month exemplifies the challenges faced by pubs. Rising costs have put significant strain on pub owners, with warnings issued about the industry’s sustainability. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, 300 pubs shut down.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before its closure, The Dove Inn ultimately faced challenges. Sonya Resemblance took over the business in July 2023 and offered a range of meals, including brunch, lunch, and popular Sunday roasts. The establishment also won two Norfolk awards at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards.
Notably, The Dove Inn’s menu was entirely gluten-free, a point of pride for Sonya as it catered to individuals with dietary restrictions. In her closure announcement, she expressed gratitude to the patrons for their support and shared her passion for providing a safe dining experience for those with dietary sensitivities.
Sonya highlighted the positive impact the business had on the community, creating jobs, offering training opportunities, and providing a vital social space for mental well-being. Despite efforts to sustain the business, challenges persisted, leading to the unavoidable decision to close.
Acknowledging the difficulties prevalent in the retail and hospitality sectors, Sonya expressed appreciation for the loyal customers who had supported The Dove Inn. The outpouring of support following the closure announcement on January 16 demonstrated the impact the business had on its patrons.
As customers expressed sadness over the closure, many hoped for a potential return of The Dove Inn in the future, showcasing the lasting impression the café and B&B had on the community.
