“Google and Back Market Offer Solution for Unsupported Laptops”

Nearly half a year has passed since Microsoft stopped providing official support for Windows 10. This move has left countless laptops without crucial security updates, making them more vulnerable to cyber threats and malicious software designed to steal data. While some newer laptops can be upgraded to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs often do not meet the necessary system requirements, putting users in a challenging position.

Users of unsupported laptops now face three options: continue using the devices without support, pay for extended updates (ESUs), or invest in new laptops that come with Windows 11 pre-installed.

For those seeking an alternative solution, Google has collaborated with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that can rejuvenate older laptops using ChromeOS Flex software.

ChromeOS Flex acts as a lightweight operating system compatible with many older computers, effectively transforming them into Chromebook-style devices. Once installed, users have access to popular services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store, all without the need to purchase a new laptop.

While ChromeOS Flex has always been available as a free download from Google, the new USB kits streamline the installation process, allowing users to test the system directly from the USB drive before making a full commitment. The kits have gained significant popularity, with high demand causing them to be currently out of stock.

In a recent blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers. Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, putting those computers at risk of obsolescence. This left many people with a difficult decision: spend hundreds on a new device, or continue using an insecure, outdated one.”

Google’s collaboration with Back Market offers the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit at a cost of around £3, with the added benefit of a reusable USB stick that helps reduce electronic waste. Despite the affordable price, the kits are currently listed as out of stock due to high demand.

Beyond the immediate benefits for old laptops, Google highlights the environmental advantages of ChromeOS Flex. According to Google, “The manufacturing process of a new laptop is responsible for a large part of its carbon footprint.”

“ChromeOS Flex allows the already-manufactured device to be used for longer, which keeps hardware out of landfills and avoids the emissions of making a new device. Savings do not stop there, ChromeOS also consumes 19% less energy on average than other comparable systems.”
