The cost of a TV licence is increasing to £180 from April, up from the current £174.50 per year. A TV licence is required to watch or record live TV, or to access any content on BBC iPlayer.
If you solely watch catch-up shows on non-BBC iPlayer streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, you do not need a TV licence. However, if you watch live shows on these platforms, a TV licence is necessary. Failure to have a TV licence while watching programmes that require one could result in a fine of up to £1,000.
In case you no longer require your TV licence before it expires, you may be eligible for a refund if there is at least one month remaining on it. Additionally, refunds are available for individuals over 75 or with visual impairments. Remember that fines of up to £1,000 can be imposed for watching TV programmes that necessitate a TV licence.
