A concerned father has raised an alarm for parents after uncovering a potential health risk concealed in his daughter’s water bottle.
Jason Sullivan, a father residing in North Bay, Canada, shared a cautionary message on TikTok after dismantling his daughter’s Yeti water bottle and discovering black mold inside. In a video clip, he meticulously disassembled two bottle parts, revealing a growth of blackened-grey mold underneath both mouthpieces.
Sullivan urged parents to inspect their children’s bottles, emphasizing that he would have been unaware of the potentially harmful mold if he hadn’t checked. He also disclosed the cleaning advice provided by the bottle company, which recommended boiling the bottle components for 5 to 10 minutes.
Following his unsettling find, Sullivan reached out to Yeti for guidance on cleaning the lids, which were not intended to be taken apart. Yeti advised him to boil the bottle parts, prompting Sullivan to share his experience with the 130,000 viewers of his video, advising them to regularly check bottles, particularly when used by kids.
Black mold poses a persistent challenge for bottle owners, thriving in dark, humid environments and posing health risks if left unaddressed. Consuming water from a container with black mold growth can lead to various symptoms, especially in individuals with compromised immune systems.
Symptoms may include digestive issues, allergies, respiratory complications, and infections, with high-risk individuals facing more severe consequences from repeated exposure. Dr. Marianne Sumego from the Cleveland Clinic highlighted the importance of proper bottle hygiene, suggesting methods like boiling water, vinegar-water solution, or dishwashing to prevent mold buildup.
Sullivan’s video resonated with other parents who shared similar experiences of finding mold in their children’s water bottles, describing it as “disgusting.” The Daily Mirror has reached out to Yeti for a statement.
